Why You Need to Be Using Xero

September 24, 2017

I have a confession to make. I am an accountant. What's more, when I started my business I never planned to offer a bookkeeping service or get involved with anything to do with accounting software. My passion was using the information that these systems contained to provide insights and advice to businesses to facilitate better decision making. The problem I found however was that it was difficult to offer these services when it was being inhibited by incorrect or incomplete data from a business' most important source ... the accounting software. I realised I needed to look into this.

I made a plan, instead of trying to become an expert in every accounting system I would pick the best. And the winner...... Xero and here's why.

Easy to Convert

One reason that I hear as to why you shouldn't change accounting systems is because it is too hard to convert. Xero has made this easy by offering a number of services that automatically pull accross the information from your existing accounting software and into your new Xero account. Better yet, some of these services are free such as Jetconvert.

I'll risk being kicked out of the profession by breaking the accountants code but these are the same services that accountants use to convert clients to Xero. Ofcourse you may still want engage an accountant to assist in the process but simple conversions can be easily performed this way.

Add-on Applications

It may seem strange to highlight what Xero can't do! The reality is that most commonly used accounting systems offer essentially the same functionality. Ofcourse you can reconcile bank accounts, process the payroll but this won't help take  your business to the next level. Xero has by far the largest range of integrated software services that talk directly to Xero and cover areas from Job & Inventory Management, POS, Online Shopping and Business Reporting.

A couple of my favourites are:

1. Receipt Bank: This app let's you take photos of your receipts on your phone and automatically read the information on them. It will then automatically create the transaction in Xero, making bank reconciliations a 2 second job. Again, most accountants use this on their clients (I am definately going to be kicked out of the profession now!)

2. Microsoft Power BI: The Xero reports are ok but Power BI let's you take things to the next level. Power BI lets you automatically connect to your Xero account, meaning you can get live, interactive reports on key business information where ever you are (including mobile).

It's Just Makes Sense

Given most accounting software offers similar functionality, one key difference between them is how easy they're to use. Xero looks nice and is layed out in a way which makes it easy to follow. Xero support are always quick to respond to questions if a simple google doesn't tell you what you need first. They make it look easy when most others make it very hard. Makes sense why their mantra is 'Beautiful Accounting Software'.

As businesses slowly transfer onto cloud based accounting software it is important to make the right choice first time. Based on my experience and the reasons above, Xero is the clear choice when making this move.

At Upside we love assisting clients along this journey. We offer Xero conversions services, post-coversion reviews (when you're using Xero but haven't quite got it right), Xero training, as well as Cloub Bookkeeping.
